Swiss tourist gang raped in India: police

Bhopal: A Swiss tourist girl gang raped in rural central India, police said sexual violence against women in South Asian countries is the latest victim.

Poor woman with her husband in Madhya Pradesh cycling trip was on Friday night when seven or eight pairs of men attacked, sexually
assaulted her and robbed the couple, police said.

The attackers "man tied and raped women in their presence," SM Afzal local police officer told AFP, adding that 10,000 rupees (185 dollars) and a cell with a woman phone is stolen.


Afzal said the attack occurred "victims, which belong to Switzerland, into a tent to spend the night".

Indian media reports said the men wielding sticks when they've been victimized couple. After the attack, the victim of rape, 40 years old, was admitted to hospital in Gwalior city and 212 miles (342 kilometers) of the state capital Bhopal, the local police officer MS, Dhodee said.

Sat victim was conscious and talking to officers, police said. No other details were known of her condition.

Dhodee AFP that police are still investigating the case but said that "a case of rape has been registered against seven persons unknown".

In Geneva, the Swiss Foreign Ministry issued a statement that they were aware of the case, but refused to provide details, citing concerns about privacy.

"Our Swiss Mission is in contact with local authorities," the statement said.

A 36-year-old girl in 2003, a popular auditorium in New Delhi on Swiss diplomat abducted in a car park and driven away by two men and raped.

He was later rescued nearby. No one is convicted for the assault. Concern 1.2 billion in security and the status of women and girls in India is high.

Violence, including rape, domestic assault, is one aspect of a wide range of, women in India many thousands of lives each year claim against the rights of workers.



Last Monday, Ram Singh, one of six during the December trial on assault charges was found, the high security prison in New Delhi was executed.

Police suspect that he hanged himself, but his family said he was killed.
